Powerful Learning, Powerful Leadership: Less is More

When creating a technology plan as a leader, especially for the very first time, our excitement can have us go over board with our plans to help educators and learners. Many of whom do not have much time to read a long instructional guide for a new software program or new device. After reviewing chapter 10 of George Cuoros book The Innovator's Mindset  and listening to Dan Pink's mindset, I find myself reviewing my plans as a technology leader to make sure that the plans provide the information required in a simple form for all educator's and learner's.  Mental Health is a broad subject and being able to narrow down which subject create a training for can be difficult. I am narrowing my choices for these lessons by conferring with mental health experts to find out which topic would be most beneficial to parents and the young adults searching for information on mental health. Keeping the information to what needs to be taught and offering exercises or chances for the ed...

Powerful Learning, Powerful Leadership

During this practicum, I continue to research and ask questions of professionals regarding the subject of mental health.    T he focus is on the main mission which is mental health awareness. What does that look like? Who are we targeting and how should we educate them?     An outreach through social media was started to begin to bring the childhood traumas to the forefront of the Vietnamese community's mind? Now what? This is the question the organization is asking itself and I have answered. We teach by using the website as a platform to help educate those who visit the site.     We begin by assessing what the person knows in regards to mental health and offering them immediate feedback on the question so that the learner can see the statistics or information on that topic.     The test assesses the learner's knowledge as well as offer the learner immediate feedback of  information regarding mental health to help ...

My Leadership Style

In every project, my first instinct as a leader is to view all sides of the project. This includes the reason for the project or training, the people it serves, and the best ways to make the project or training successful. In my current practicum, I find myself developing a supportive leadership role.  I think for this particular project the leadership role leans toward the supportive role due to the subject matter. The training requires the assistance of mental health professionals to determine what subjects would be most helpful for the parents.  During this time, I am learning when to lead and when to pull back and allow others take the lead in the planning. During the first week of my practicum, I listened as my mentor and her team discuss plans on their next project. Then I viewed the website and mission statement.  My mentor and I met to discuss my plans based on the information I received from the meetings and organization website. I explained my suggestion a...

Relationship, Relationship, Relationship

As I viewed a short video titled "First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy" ( https://youtu.be/fW8amMCVAJQ ), the confidence of one man gained the interest of others to follow suit.  When thinking of my role as a tech leader/facilitator, communication and observation is key. Being able to watch, listen, and learn what the instructor or institution requires, helps facilitators to identify what is the problem or speed bump which allows them to figure out possible ways to help narrow the learning gap. As the subject content is new to me, I am going through the LMS system to learn the information and review the setup to see where some refinement can be made to the program. Reviewing the details and following through on the homework gives me a better idea of what the facilitators will be teaching the students and will help with empowering the facilitators to take risk in their teaching style. Because the staff is not in a central location and we are all remote, building...

Technology Facilitator

Image
Here is my version of Bill Ferriter Style As I reviewed what a technology facilitator should look like, I thought about the idea of innovation. Innovation is the creation of a new thought or machine to fulfill a need or want. Although innovation does not come from repeating the same process, innovation can appear while doing the process repetitively.  Like the inventor of the jigsaw who was looking for a better way of sawing wood.  For technology facilitator, innovation comes from studying the process and searching for ways to improve or develop another effective way of communicating the same information with the use of technology.  In the above image, I described how the facilitator works and who or what is helped by their actions.  The facilitators' job is to listen to their audience. In this case, the audience are administrators, teachers, and students. After which they will evaluate the process to see where improvements can be made. Then discuss or report ...

Hi Everyone! Welcome to my blog. My name is Thu Pham and I am a graduate student at Sam Houston State University. Although I am not in an educational institution any more, I find myself always training or teaching someone.  If I were to pick a quote that fits my philosophy on teaching and technology, that quote would be: "The most important thing that schools can do is not to use technology in the curriculum more, but to use it more effectively."- John G Palfrey and Urs Gasser
